Romanze (Salem, MA 1999-2004)
This piece was originally started as a small Valentine's Day
present for someone incredibly special to me. Unfortunately, I couldn't fight my way through
it to completion because of the turmoil in my life at the time.
Additionally, what was to be a several minute piece of very light and simple
textures [read "easy to write"], turned into a much more complicated affair. I
am very happy with how it turned out and I learned very important lessons during the writing. Like many pieces of mine, I find that when things are going well, the piece takes on a life of its own, and dictates the logic of how it will turn out in a way that I don't conceive in the original idea. I suppose that this could be taken as an admission of my inability to control my materials, but I don't usually think of it that way. Since there is no one but me writing, I must be controlling the materials. However, I tend to follow the organic implications of the music and learn the path along the way that is, many times, more interesting than the one that I started following.
I have finally revised the score and finished the data-entry. I am very happy with the result. Let me know what you think.
